IVSS Expands to Two Years: Enhanced Training for Venue Safety and Security Professionals

Jun 6, 2024Blog

After the highly successful launch of the Institute of Venue Safety and Security (IVSS) in 2023 we are delighted to announce that it is back for its second year. IVSS is already recognised as the pre-imminent industry-led training institution in the region for safety, security and risk for the venues and events industry.

After thorough feedback and evaluation, we’re proud to offer an expanded course curriculum delving deeper into the subjects offered. IVSS 2024 now offers a comprehensive two-year program, reflecting our commitment to advancing expertise and excellence in venue safety and security.

The two-year program is comprised of:

  • Two x one-week residential programs held in August of each year delivering 25 safety and security-specific subjects utilising case studies, classroom discussions, industry best-practice analyses, industry specialist panels, and small group discussions to ensure you master them all;
  • Daily Independent Discussion Groups (IDGs) where students dive deep into discussions on the subjects covered throughout the day. IDGs include venue site visits to ensure that the teachings are applied directly into the workplace;
  • Venue Application Projects where students are provided with resources to apply and implement the teachings back in the workplace. The resources are discussed in the IDGs to ensure application and implementation can commence immediately; plus
  • Quarterly IVSS Town Halls: A platform and community for our IVSS instructors and students to stay connected throughout the year and discuss issues and topics relevant to venue safety and security.

IVSS Chair Wayne Middleton CVE, said “after the success of last year’s IVSS we’ve expanded the suite of topics, across a range of domains relevant to venue managers and risk professionals.  These include security, risk management, health and safety,  crowd science, life safety and compliance, emergency management, training and development, leadership and influence, and severe weather.  By expanding the program across two years we are confident that students of IVSS will graduate with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to face the evolving risks and threats that venues face now and into the future.  On behalf of the VMA Board, the IVSS Committee is excited to deliver this year’s program”.

With the growing complexity of security threats and risks, crowd safety, the multifaceted nature of compliance, and the changing nature of what is recognised as industry best practice, the expanded IVSS program is a significant step towards enhancing the industry’s prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities.

The IVSS’s mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, and training to keep our venues safe and secure, and to understand and manage the broad range of threats that can impact the hosting of successful events.

The industry support for IVSS also continues through the Evolv Technology Bursary that is awarded to the highest performing Year 1 student. The winner has their enrolment fees covered to return for Year 2 of IVSS and graduate the program.

We are now accepting enrolments for this year’s IVSS at Accor Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, from Sunday 25 to Friday 30 August 2024. Enrolment fees include five nights’ accommodation at Pullman Sydney Olympic Park, all meals during the program; site visits; student resources; formal dinners.
