With Anthony Chin
Senior AV Project Manager, International Convention Centre Sydney
Anthony’s journey in the venue management industry is a compelling testament to the transformative power of continuous learning and professional development. Beginning with a passion for expanding his skills, Anthony’s career took a significant leap in 2022 when he was introduced to the Venue Management School (VMS) by Brian Nash, Director of AV Services at ICC Sydney. This pivotal moment not only ignited a deep enthusiasm for venue management but also led Anthony to immerse himself in the vibrant community of the Venue Management Association (VMA).
Anthony’s active participation in the VMA’s After 5! Networking events, the annual Asia-Pacific Venue Industry Congress, and several educational programs have profoundly shaped his career and personal growth. His story highlights how the VMA’s resources and connections can propel professionals in the venue management field to new heights. Through his experiences, including the impactful VMS education and winning a prestigious scholarship to the International Association of Venue Managers’ (IAVM) Leadership Institute in the USA, Anthony’s journey demonstrates the immense value of being part of such a supportive and dynamic network.
Recently, we had the pleasure of catching up with Anthony to delve into his remarkable journey in the venue management industry. We explored his experiences with the VMA, the transformative impact of the scholarship he received, and how the IAVM’s Leadership Institute program has influenced his professional development over the past few months. Here’s what Anthony had to share about his growth, the value of VMA Membership, and the insights gained from his recent achievements:
How did you first get involved in the venue management industry, and what led you to become involved with the VMA?
My journey into the venue management industry began with a love for continuous learning and professional development. It was a natural progression, sparked by attending various short courses. In 2022, ICC Sydney Director of AV Services Brian Nash offered me the chance to attend the Venue Management School (VMS), and that’s when the real adventure began.
That first year ignited a passion within me to grow and expand my skills across multiple areas. Since then, I’ve become a regular at After 5! networking events, the VMA Congress, and various VMA short courses. It’s been a whirlwind of learning, connecting, and, occasionally, remembering everyone’s names!
How would you say your VMA Membership has supported your career development and personal growth?
The networking opportunities that VMA offers are priceless. After attending VMS, my year group stayed connected through a lively group chat, providing guidance and advice on a range of topics. This support extends beyond professional benefits to our personal lives as well.
Through VMA, I’ve expanded my network significantly, connecting with industry contacts who offer valuable advice and mentorship. The strength of this network is invaluable, especially when facing tough decisions or seeking growth opportunities. It’s like having a personal board of directors on speed dial!
Having completed VMS Year 1 & 2 education programs, which has been your favorite experience so far? Why?
VMS Year 1 was fantastic—it sparked my growth journey and expanded my network. But Year 2 took it to another level, cementing relationships and strengthening bonds formed back in 2022.
The education at VMS is unmatched. The intense classes, top-notch instructors, and a wonderful location create a unique experience. While Year 1 was transformative, Year 2 was even more rewarding because our cohort had become more comfortable with each other, leading to richer discussions and deeper connections.

Winning the Scholarship to Attend LI in the USA is an incredible achievement. Can you tell us more about the scholarship and the opportunities it provided you?
In VMS Year 2, I pushed myself to make the most of the program. When my name was announced as the recipient of the ASM Global Scholarship, I was floored and deeply humbled.
This scholarship allowed me to join the International Association of Venue Managers in the US and attend their Leadership Institute near Tampa, Florida. It was a dream come true—my first professional trip to the US, treated like a rockstar by some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met.
The professionalism of the students and the insights from the trainers were invaluable. I maximized my time by touring additional venues and networking across the country, learning how American venues operate on a massive scale. It was an eye-opening experience filled with amazing encounters and fantastic people.
I would also like to thank ASM Global for sponsoring this award and the opportunity it created.
In what ways do you plan to apply the knowledge and skills gained from LI in your current role or future career endeavors?
The biggest takeaway from the LI experience was communication. In a people-focused industry, honing communication skills is crucial. The deep dive into personality profiling during LI helped our class connect on a much deeper level.
These skills are transferable across any job or industry, benefiting both my professional and personal life. Effective communication and understanding people better are keys to success in any field.
Lastly, what advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the VMA and pursuing professional development through our association?
If you’re considering joining, attend an industry mixer to meet the people behind the association. The professionalism and connection shared among peers are remarkable. Networking and sharing experiences can benefit everyone, whether you’re looking for professional development or just meaningful industry connections.
From the After 5! social events, there’s a natural progression to short courses, VMS, and the Congress. It’s a journey worth taking, filled with opportunities to grow, connect, and break down barriers. And who knows, you might even find yourself navigating a tough situation with the help of newfound friends.
